Negroni's, a Music Icon & Vanishing Vices

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

We're spilling the tea on our former neighbor's dad, Generoso "Gene" Pope, the founder of The National Enquirer in episode 28, The Tabloid Don.

The Negroni, an Italian palette cleanser and aperitif, seemed to be a fitting accompaniment.

The NY Times describes the Negroni as a “bittersweet palate cleanser that makes way for the evening’s delights”.

A traditional Negroni is made of one part gin, one part vermouth, and one part Campari and it's garnished with orange peel. It's stirred, not shaken, and built over ice in an old-fashioned or rocks glass and garnished with a slice of orange.

This recipe is courtesy Jim Meehan, a bartender and owner of Please Don't Tell, a speakeasy in the East Village in Manhattan.

Recipe:

  • 1¼ ounces gin

  • 1¼ ounces Campari

  • 1¼ ounces sweet vermouth

  • Orange twist, for garnish

Stir all liquid ingredients with ice. Strain into chilled rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange twist. Alla Nostra!
